Wednesday, 10 October 2007

Expelled BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan welcomed former President and Bikalpadhara chief Professor Badruddoza Chowdhury's call for a government of national consensus, saying that this transitional arrangement would help resolve many problems facing the nation, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters at his Gulshan residence Tuesday afternoon, a day after the breakaway BNP leader (B Chowdhury) floated the formula, Bhuiyan said in his statement in the last parliament and on many other occasions he had made similar observations that political parties should work jointly on national issues.
"We will be able to move one step forward if there is a government of national consensus-we support this concept. We should reach consensus on it as, we feel, many problems could be resolved through such government," said Bhuiyan.
The former President, Badruddoza Chowdhury, mooted the idea of government of national consensus at an Iftar Party he hosted for politicians and civil-society leaders Monday.
Asked why he did not join B Chowdhury's Iftar Party, Bhuiyan said they had the decision to join the party, but they could not turn up due to Eid shopping.
Asked whether his faction of BNP will join any alliance under the leadership of Badruddoza Chowdhury, he said, "The alliance is far away; we will think of it when it will be formed."
In reply to a question, he said a national government could be formed in consultation with all parties before or after the general elections. "The sooner the better."
Bhuiyan, who campaigns reform within BNP in the changed political context, said reform of the party must be done before the formation of any national government.
