The Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) is holding partnership programmes to create skilled workforce for the private sector.
"In addition to regular programmes, the BMET has taken up partnership programmes with a number of organisations including BGMEA, Apex Footwear, BAT, Unilever and Western Marine Shipyard to train workers for them," said a high official of BMET.
The bureau has an understanding with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to train up 15,000 workers in eight categories every year, he said.
"We have started training programmes on operator, quality control, supervisor, manager, cutting and design and are going to start courses for mechanics, merchandisers and executives very soon," he added.
In addition, BGMEA also recruits 1,200 people from different char areas (reclaimed lands), the official said. The Apex Footwear has an agreement with the bureau to train 3,000 shoe-sewing operators.
"The company has provided teaching machinery and raw materials and so far, we have trained two batches of Apex workers at the Tangail Technical Training Centre (TTC)," he said. On the other hand, Western Marine sends its workers to Narayanganj TTC for training and British American Tobacco and Unilever workers get on-job training, he added.
After the training, initial salaries of the workers range between Tk 2,000 and Tk 20,000 depending on companies and training category.
"Multinational (MNC) and reputed local companies usually give higher initial salaries and welding is usually a high-paid job," the official said.BMET has 37 training centres and last year it trained about 42,000 people in 42 categories. It has training programmes with durations varying from 15 days to four years.
Not all of them go abroad just after finishing their training and about 25,000 workers are absorbed in MNCs or local companies.
Singer, Rangs, Philips, Youngone, Ananda Shipyards, small power plants and other companies recruit the workers, the BMET official said. The BMET was established in 1976 by the government as an attached department of the then Ministry of Manpower Development and Social Welfare with a specific purpose of meeting the manpower requirement of the country and for export of manpower.
