Tuesday, 25 December 2007

JHALOKATI, Dec 24 (UNB): The government has allocated Tk 19.70 million for the agricultural rehabilitation in the district but farmers of some important sectors are likely to be deprived of the programme.
Some 2,500 vegetable farmers and 10,178 hybrid boro cultivators will receive seeds and fertiliser under the programme but farmers of some other sectors, including betel-leaf, banana, papaya and guava have not been brought under the programme.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), each farmer will receive seeds and fertiliser worth Tk 150.00 for cultivating vegetables on three decimals of land.
Some 500 farmers will be brought under the rehabilitation programme in Sadar, 400 in Nolchhiti and 800 each in Kathalia and Rajapur upazilas, officials said.
For cultivating hybrid boro paddy on one bigha, farmers will get two kilograms of seed, 35 kilograms of urea fertiliser, five kilograms of TSP and 70 kilograms of MOP. The seeds and fertiliser will be distributed among 5,565 farmers in Sadar, 3,858 in Nolchhiti, 225 in Rajapur and 530 in Kathalia upazilas.
Aman farmers of the district have become upset as they are out of the list this time. They demanded more allocation for them.
Farmers of the district faced floods three times in August, September and October last but the Sidr hit the district before the betel-leaf harvesting.
Meanwhile, thousands of farmers of 40 villages in the district maintain their livelihood by cultivating guava and the cyclone Sidr has thrown them into a long-term loss of Tk 5.0 billion.
They will have to uproot the old guava trees, plant new saplings and wait for the fruit for six to seven years.
DAE officials, however, said that it was a temporary allocation. Proposal for more allocation had been sent to the authority concerned, they added.
The farmers cultivating betel-leaf, guava, aus paddy and pulses would also be rehabilitated gradually, they said.
