CHITTAGONG, May 17: BNP is pitting Manzur Alam, a close confidant of incumbent mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and former acting mayor, against him in the race in the upcoming CCC election.
Manzur has been picked as the main opposition party's mayoral candidate for the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls on June 17, several sources in the party confirmed.
Arriving in Dhaka on Monday afternoon, Alam said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had summoned him. "I am supposed to meet her at the Gulshan office in the evening."
Manzur was acting mayor for two years when Mohiuddin was arrested by joint forces during the last caretaker government. He was involved with Chittagong city Awami League for a long time. In the ninth parliament election he contested as a non-party candidate, but was defeated to Awami League candidate Dr Afsarul Amin.
Meanwhile, BNP leader Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury Monday procured a nomination form for the post of CCC mayor.
Accompanied by a group of BNP and Chatra Dal workers GQ Chowdhury, president of BNP Chittagong north district unit and younger brother of the party's standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury MP, purchased the nomination form from the district election office.
He is the first man to take nomination form since announcement of the CCC polls schedule by the Election Commission.
Earlier, BNP took the decision to join the election Sunday. The party's standing committee held a 3.5-hour meeting Sunday evening until 11:30pm, following which Khaleda Zia sat in another session with two top leaders from Chittagong.
Several members of BNP standing committee had said Khaleda had been given the charge of selecting the mayor candidate for the upcoming CCC polls.
The last date for filing nominations of the June 17 CCC polls is May 20 and June 1 for withdrawals. The tenure of the current city council runs out on June 25.
