March sees 4.0m more internet subscribers

Both mobile and broadband internet users in Bangladesh witnessed a growth of more than 4.0 million month on month in March, predominantly attributed to the expansion of the country's mobile subscriber network.
The rise has brought the cumulative count of internet subscribers to 134.70 million, marking a record growth, according to the data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Of 134 million, mobile internet subscribers reached 121.26 million and broadband internet subscribers stood at 13.44 million.
Mobile internet subscribers jumped from 117.47 million in February to 121.26 million in March, adding nearly four million, a record increase in a month.
After six months of continuous decline, the number of mobile internet subscribers in the country increased by 1.17 million at the end of February.
On the other hand, broadband internet subscribers increased from 12.88 million in February to 13.44 million in March.
During this period, mobile operators in the country have added 0.88 million new subscribers, bringing the total number of subscribers to 192.26 million in March.
The largest operator Grameenphone gained 640,000 subscribers in the month while Robi Axiata and Banglalink lost 270,000.
The third-largest mobile operator Banglalink obtained 470,000 subscribers in March. The government-owned telecom operator Teletalk gained 3000 subscribers.
The number of subscribers for each mobile operator--Grameen Phone, Robi Axiata, Banglalink Digital Communications, and Teletalk Bangladesh --stood at 83.22 million, 58.07 million, 44.43 million, and 6.53 million respectively, at the end of March, as per the data.
