Market monitoring to be intensified

Sunday, 28 October 2007

FE Report
The caretaker government, concerned over the continuous hike in the prices of essentials, decided Saturday to intensify direct supervision and monitoring of the market situation from the highest level.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed at the weekly meeting of Council of Advisers directed his council members to continue paying field-level visits to oversee the price situation of essential commodities.
Other purposes of their field-level visits will be to monitor and supervise the implementation process of the post-flood rehabilitation programme and supply situation of fertilisers, the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Fahim Monaim told newsmen after the meeting.
To facilitate the field visits of the cabinet members, the Council of Advisers decided to hold its weekly meeting on Sundays instead of Saturdays, he noted.
The Council of Advisers, however, admitted the fact that despite taking various preventive measures by the government, prices of different essential items have gone up in the market, Fahim mentioned.
However, the meeting in principle approved the proposed Mobile Court Ordinance 2007, giving some judicial power to the executive magistrates, Fahim said.
Proposed by the Ministry of Law, he said the ordinance is expected to get final nod today (Sunday) at a scheduled meeting of the Council of Advisers, he mentioned.
After adoption of the ordinance, the executive officials will have magistracy power to conduct mobile courts and summary trials, especially for serving the purpose of executive functions.
After a thorough discussion about the proposed Integrated Multi-dimensional Transport Policy, the meeting asked the Ministry of Communications to fine-tune the policy and place it again before the cabinet.
Issues like environment-friendly transportation systems, development of human resources, development of need-based transport networks in the country and adoption of special transport systems in cities are expected to get priority in the proposed policy.
The Council of Advisers also approved the proposal for bringing the remains of 'Beer Sreshtha' Hamidur Rahman back to the country from a grave in Tripura state of India.
Under the proposal, the government will make a formal proposal to the government of India in December next in this connection, he said.
The meeting decided that the remains of Hamidur Rahman, who sacrificed his life for liberating the country, will be laid to rest beside the grave of country's another hero 'Beer Sreshtha' Motiur Rahman at the Intellectual Graveyard at Mirpur in Dhaka.
Responding to a question about the expansion of the Council of Advisers, Fahim said appointments of consultants to the advisers are under active consideration of the government.
The government has already consulted with legal experts with regard to such appointment criteria and their designation, he mentioned.
