Martyred Intellectuals Day being observed

Sunday, 14 December 2014

Martyred Intellectuals Day today (Sunday). The day is being observed with due respect. This day in 1971, on the eve of the country’s independence, the Pakistan army and its auxiliary force in collusion with their local collaborators picked up and killed the cream of Bangladesh’s intelligentsia. President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Raushan Ershad in separate messages paid respect to the martyred intellectuals and recalled their great contribution to the development of national consciousness. The national flag will fly at half-mast and black flags will be hoisted atop all government buildings, national institutions and other important places. Elaborate programmes have been taken to observe the day, nationally. Bangladesh Awami League and its front and associate organisations and different other political social-cultural bodies have chalked out various programme to mark the day with befitting manner, according to a news agency.
