Mass hysteria in Jessore, four schools closed

KHULNA, July 10:- Four educational institutions of Jessore have been closed temporarily due to outbreak of mass hysteria. A five member committee of ICDDR,B called by the health department visited the schools and Jessore Sadar Hospital.

Sources said that ten female students of Barinagor Abdul Gafur Memorial High School of Jessore Sadar Upazilla were stricken by mass hysteria on June-2 and they were admitted to General Hospital. Later some students of Natuapara High School, Satmile High School and Lalitadha Dakhil Madrasah were stricken by mass hysteria. Side by side local people also were stricken by the same diseases and admitted to the Hospital. Over one hundred people had suffered during the last three days, source added.

As a result panic has spread among the common people of Natuapara and Barinagor area of Jessore Upazilla. In this situation the authority declared the closure of the four educational institutions temporarily. Later a team led by Civil Surgeon visited the schools and a five member team of ICDDR,B visited the schools and talked with the stricken patients at hospital.

The health officer of Sadar Upazilla Dr. Abul Kalam Azad said that the ICDDR,B team commented that the mass hysteria resulted from mental and physical weakness.
