Massive cultivation of vegetables going on in northern region

KURIGRAM, Nov 02: Winter vegetables cultivation is going on in a massive way in eight districts in greater Rangpur and Dinajpur region in the current season. The production target has been set at 0.612 million tonnes of vegetables this season on 51,000 hectares of land at the rate of 12mt per hectare.
The farmers had failed to cultivate vegetables in the last season due to fertiliser crisis and its price hike caused financial loss to farmers. They are cultivating more vegetables early this year to overcome the loss.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said, cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, bitter gourd, radish, carrot, potol, lal shak, spinach, cow pea, brinjal etc vegetables are produced in the greater Rangpur-Dinajpur region. The vegetables are sent to other parts of the country after meeting the local demand.
The DAE sources said a total of 51 thousand hectares of land of which 6 thousand hectares of land in Kurigram district, 8 thousand in Rangpur, 6 thousand in Gaibandha, 5 thousand in Lalmonirhat, 6 thousand in Nilphamari, 10 thousand in Dinajpur, 6 thousand in Thakurgaon and 4 thousand hectares of land in Panchagarh district have been brought under vegetables cultivation.
Some farmers of Chilmari Upazila told this correspondent that vegetable was a major cash crop of the region as it was very profitable.
Mogolbacha union under Sadar Upazila is famous for brinjal cultivation and Kathalbari union for potato, cauliflower, cabbage and others vegetables.
The early varieties of cauliflower, radish are already seen in the market which are being sold at Tk 30 and Tk 12 per kilogramme respectively.
