Massive flowering of mango signals a bumper production in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Mar 29: Massively bloomed Mango trees in 8 districts under Rangpur Division have brought smiles on the faces of the growers, making them optimistic of achieving a bumper yield of the delicious fruit during the current season.
According to DAE sources mango cultivation is getting popular in the region as a good number of people achieved self-reliance through it in recent years. At present the farmers have been caring and taking necessary steps to make mango cultivation successful everywhere.
DAE sources said, about 18,500 hectares of land have been brought under commercial mango cultivation in the division this year and the production target is 1.55 lakh tonnes.
The booming mango flowering in the orchards and homestead areas predicts an excellent production of the most popular fruit this season in Rangpur division. Experts, officials in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and agronomists said over 85 per cent mango trees have already bloomed.
Farmers have already started taking adequate preparations to make mango farming a success in their orchards. If the extents of seasonal nor'westers remain within the tolerable limits, there is a huge possibility of achieving a record bumper production of all varieties this season, DAE sources said.
Sources also said, many varieties including the sweetest ones like Haribhanga Lengra, Chyatapori, Gopalbhog, Fazlee, Nakfazlee, Amropali, Khirsapati, Mohanbhog, and Lakhna are grown abundantly in the region.
Kashem Mia, a mango grower of Balua Masimpur area at Mithapukur upazila under Rangpur district told The Financial Express that he has over 200 mango trees in his orchard. He has cultivated Haribhanga and Amropali varieties of mango. He is hopeful of attaining a satisfactory yield of his produce this season if the weather remains conducive.
Deputy Director of the DAE Rangpur, Feroz Ahmed said, encouraged by huge profit in recent years a good number of farmers of the region are getting interested in mango cultivation, consequently mango cultivation has increased in the region over the last few years. He advised the farmers to contact the agriculture officers at the field levels and control attacks by hoppers and some other pests' on the mango flowers for a good mango production.
