Massive social awareness to prevent HIV/AIDS stressed

CHITTAGONG, Oct 25 (BSS): Speakers at a consultation meeting on HIV/AIDS here Saturday underscored the need for launching a massive social awareness campaign side by side taking effective measures to prevent the deadly disease HIV/AIDS before it turn into an epidemic form in the country.
They laid emphasis on mainstreaming the HIV/AIDS prevention programme in a planned manner like other crucial socio-political issues as the menace could emerge as a potential health and social threat for the country due to its geographical location and increasing flow of migrated workforce.
They said young people should be sensitised on priority basis and given effective guideline on safe health practices as the segment of the population is more vulnerable than others of being affected with HIV/AIDS.
Chittagong regional office of Narcotics Control Department (NCD) organised the consultation meeting under its project titled "Capacity building initiative for law enforcing agencies to promote reproductive health and rights, prevent gender based violence and HIV/AIDS".
Home Secretary Mohammad Abdul Karim was present as the chief guest while Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Hossain Jamil and Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Moniruzzaman spoke as special guests at the function held at local circuit house.
Deputy Secretary (Admin ) of the Home Ministry and Director of the project Abu Taleb Mollah made welcome speech while Dr AQM Serajul Islam, Dr Sarfaraj Khan Chowdhury and Khandaker Zakiur Rahman conducted the consultation participated by representatives from various public and private organisations.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Abdul Karim said the deadly disease HIV/ADIS had already turned into a major health hazard across the world and Bangladesh was not out of risk from this disease.
