Prime Minister’s Energy Advisor Dr Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury has said the Matarbari 1,200 megawatt (MW) coal-fired plant will be the most modern and efficient power plant in the region. Japan has come forward as a single country to help Bangladesh set up the project, he said while addressing a programme in the city. The 2x600MW Ultra Super Critical Coal-fired Power plant will substantially raise the country’s power output and help improve living standard of the people, he said. The ECNEC on Tuesday okayed the Tk 359.84 billion (Tk 35984.46 crore) power plant, bigger than the Padma Bridge Project. Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCL) under the Power Division will implement the project at Matarbari under Dhalghata union of Moheshkhali Upazila in Cox’s Bazaar district. Tk 49.26 b (4,926.66 cr) will come from the organisation (CPGCL)’s own fund while Tk 289.39 b (28939.03 cr) from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according to a news agency.
