Matin asks shipping experts Keep quality, commitment

Friday, 17 October 2008

Shipping Adviser Major General (retd) MA Matin has called upon the shipping experts to maintain quality and commitment to have success in the field, reports BSS.
"As such shipbuilding may become a thrust sector in Bangladesh in the near future, I hope we'll not miss the opportunity to develop our nation," he told the inaugural function of the World Maritime Day as the chief guest.
The Ministry of Shipping and the Department of Shipping jointly organised the function at a city hotel Thursday.
Referring to Bangladesh's success in earning foreign exchange through raising employment in the Middle East and other countries, Matin expressed the hope that similar achievements in the shipping sector would boost the remittance significantly as the wages of the seafarers were much higher than the workers ashore.
The shipping adviser said Bangladesh used to be a traditional source of seamen and its brave seafarers were well-known to the world.
"But the country has been experiencing a downward employment trend for its seamen for the last couple of years.'', he said.
He urged all to do their best to help increase employment of the Bangladeshi seafarers.
Because of the significant development in the sector in the last 60 years, Matin said, shipping remained the most cost-effective for the transport of raw materials, products and people and it constituted an important source of income for developing countries like Bangladesh.
"Activities such as employment of human workforce, shipbuilding, repairing, ship scrapping and port services contribute a lot to the economic uplift by improving the living standard and bringing prosperity to the developing countries," the shipping adviser said.
Moreover, he said, in a number of occasions in the last few years, shipping provided quick assistance to the communities that suffered from natural disasters.
Matin, who is also the adviser for home and liberation war affairs, expected that the observance of the World Maritime Day would help increase awareness of compliance with internationally accepted legal instruments and standard regarding maritime safety and efficiency of navigation.
With Director General of the Department of Shipping Captain AKM Shafiqullah in the chair, the function was addressed by Shipping Secretary Sheikh AK Motahar Hossain, Chief Engineer of the Department of Shipping AKM Alauddin and Managing Director of All Seas Ltd Khondakar R Zaman.
Later, the shipping adviser handed over awards to three companies for their commendable role in the shipping sector.
The companies were Ananda Shipyard and Shipway Ltd, Karnaphully Ship Builder and Highspeed Group of Companies.
