May 30 as Nat'l Mourning Day demanded

Sunday, 3 August 2008

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Saturday demanded that the government announce May 30 as National Mourning Day and a public holiday, reports UNB.

The party at a joint meeting at the NAM apartment of secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain also asked the caretaker government to revive November 7 as a public holiday.

The call for the day came as the party's founder and former president Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981. The BNP and its political allies observe November 7 as "National Solidarity Day."

The latest political government under Khaleda Zia's leadership used to observe November 7 as a public holiday but the caretaker government later scrapped the arrangement.

Leaders of the party's front organisations and other senior leaders attended the meeting Saturday.

At a post-meeting news briefing, Khondoker Delwar said they were optimistic about sitting with the government to talk about release of Khaleda.

"It's better the government sits with us to talk about it," he said.

Replying to a query, Delwar repeated his claim that he had no idea with whom the government was talking about Khaleda's release.

The meeting decided to commemorate the 30th founding anniversary of the BNP on September 1.

Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui was made Convener while Nazrul Islam Khan Member Secretary of the commemoration committee, the meeting decided.
