May Day being observed befittingly

May Day today (Thursday). The historic May Day is being observed in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world befittingly. In Bangladesh, May 1 is being observed with a fresh vow to establish the rights of workers. The 1st of May, also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, commemorates the historic uprising of working people in Chicago of USA in 1886 at the height of a prolonged fight for an eight-hour workday. Trade unions and professional groups have taken up various programmes to observe the day to press for improving the working conditions with better wages for the workers and job security. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the great May Day on Wednesday evening. Marking the day, the ministry of labour and employment brought out a rally at 7am on Thursday from Shromo Bhobon in the city, which ended in front of National Press Club. The labour and employment ministry will arrange a discussion at Osmani Smriti Auditorium at 10am. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be present as the chief guest at the discussion to be held with State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu in the chair. On this occasion, the Prime Minister will address a rally in Gazipur city. Jatiya Sramik League will organise the rally at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground. Besides, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is likely to address a rally in Dhaka’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan, marking the May Day. Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the workers’ front of BNP, will organise the rally, according to a news agency.
