Maya rules out midterm election

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Friday said the government has been elected for a five-year term as per the constitution, and ruled out the possibility of any midterm election. “The hope (of BNP) for a midterm election has got dashed. The government will remain in power for five years. If any political party thinks of any alternative through conspiracy, its political consequences will be more dreadful than the present one,” he told a commemoration meeting in the city. Maya also said the people of the country have elected them for five years as per the constitution. He said the BNP-led alliance did not take part in the January 5 election sensing its defeat. “They’re now also staging a drama over upazila elections. They’re in indecision whether to join and boycott the upazila elections.” The minister also said BNP might not join the upazila election if they feel that they might get defeated in it. He said Awami League is a pro-election and pro-movement political party, and the party will remain active in the streets apart from its engagement in all elections. Food Minister Adv Quamrul Islam was also present at the meeting, arranged marking the 20th death anniversary of seven AL leaders and activists killed 1994 after Dhaka City Corporation elections, according to a news agency.
