Maya\\\'s acquittal of graft charges cancelled

Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya is in trouble. Supreme Court (SC)’s Appellate Division has quashed a High Court (HC) order acquitting Maya of corruption charges in a case 7 years ago. The SC on Sunday cancelled the HC order that had acquitted the minister of graft allegations. A 3-member SC bench lead by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order on Sunday afternoon. The bench also ordered for starting new hearing. Earlier on October 27 in 2010, High Court scrapped a lower court verdict that awarded 13 year jail and Tk50 million (Tk five crore) fines to Maya on February 14 in 2008. The lower court also confiscated his wealth worth Tk60m. On June 13, assistant director of Anti-Corruption Commission Nurul Alam filed a case with capital’s Sutrapur Thana for acquiring wealth worth Tk 2.9 million, according to bdnews24.com.
