CHITTAGONG, Jan 18: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) today distributed cheques of Tk 23.20 million to the poor students and children living in slums in the city.
City Mayor M Manjur Alam handed over the cheques to some 4,000 school children at a function organised on the occasion at Swadhinata Park at Chandgaon under poverty alleviation and education support jointly funded by the Bangladesh Government, UK AID and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme).
The Mayor said that the fund was distributed to those children who have been dropped out due to lack of monetary support from their poor parents so that the ill-fated children can study in the schools.
There is no alternative to education and today's children are the pioneers of tomorrow's nation building. He thanked the government, UK AID and UNDP for providing financial support to the poor children.
A good number of councillors, senior officials of the City Corporation and members of the town team of the project were present on the occasion.
