MCCI to honour contribution to minimising river pollution

Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) has introduced awards for journalists and entrepreneurs to honour their contribution to minimising river pollution and at the same time ensuring that productions are not hampered or employment threatened.
This was disclosed at a meeting between MCCI and executive committee of the Jatiya Press Club, Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh and Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital Saturday.
During the meeting, MCCI president Abdul Hafiz Choudhury said the awards would be given every year.
Of the two awards, one will be given to a journalist/producer of TV programme for best investigative journalism/electronic media programme on river pollution caused by discharge of industrial effluents, he said.
The award comprises an MCCI plaque with citation, a cash amount of Tk 100,000 and books and periodicals on environmental issues including annual subscription up to Tk 50,000.
The criteria for selection of investigative journalism/TV programme are: (i.) It must be investigative journalism/TV programme/TV feature film on river pollution caused by discharge of effluents of industrial enterprises printed/ published/ telecast between January 1 and September 30, 2009; (ii.) It must contain specific suggestions for solution/control of the said river pollution; (iii.) It must contribute to raising of public awareness on the need for prevention/control of river pollutions; (iv.) it must have impact on print/electronic media so as to be followed up by similar reports/programmes in a systematic manner to contribute to the cause of clean rivers.
Another award will be given to an entrepreneur/enterprise who/which has taken commendable initiative for treatment/control of effluent discharge during the period, thereby minimising/eliminating environmental pollution, Mr Choudhury said.
The selected entrepreneur/ enterprise will be presented with an MCCI plaque with citation.
A five-member committee headed by Dr Akbar Ali Khan, former adviser to caretaker government, will make both the selections.
Other members of the committee are Syeda Rizwana Hasan, executive director of Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association, A H M Moazzem Hossain, editor of The Financial Express, Abdul Hafiz Choudhury, president of MCCI, and C K Hyder, adviser to the committee of MCCI.
The selection committee has invited nominations of such newspaper reports/TV programmes/TV feature films.
For each nomination, a copy of the newspaper report/a CD of TV programme/TV feature film has to be sent with the nomination, organisers said.
The journalists/producers of TV programme/feature film can also submit the newspaper report/TV programme/TV feature film.
The last date for submission of nominations for selection is December 15, 2009.
