MD among 8 RMG officials arrested in Gazipur

GAZIPUR, May 19 (UNB): Police arrested eight officials, including a Managing Director, of two garment factories here on Tuesday night. Six of the arrested are Iftekhar Ahmed, Managing Director of Sheikh Sweater factory, Production Manager Shah Alam, officer Shahidul Islam and Nazrul, Latif and Shamim - officials of another factory PQM Fashion. Sub Inspector Sujayet Hossain, in-charge of Bhogra police outpost, said that the arrestees were produced before a court on Wednesday and the court rejecting their bail prayers sent them to jail hajat. Police and local sources said Sheikh Sweater at Board Bazar recently took an order from Nexus Sweater factory at Bhogra in Sadar upazila for supplying them 6,700 pieces of garment items worth about Tk 4.00 million. Instead of supplying the items to Nexus Sweater within the stipulated time, authorities of Sheikh Sweater sold the items to PQM Fashion at Uttara in the capital. Nexus authorities on Monday night filed a case with Joydevpur thana against Iftekhar Ahmed, Shah Alam and Shahidul Islam. Police on Tuesday night arrested the three accused and, on their statement, arrested another five people, including Nazrul, Latif and Shamim, from PQM Fashion. Rashid Ahmed Hossaini, Managing Director of Nexus garment, said that an organised quarter misappropriates all the goods after receiving sub-contract order from different factories instead of supplying those to the factory with whom they sign agreement. He said such gangs lie in wait on the way and loot export quality goods along with vehicle when the factories send their goods to Chittagong for shipment.
