Measles, rubella vaccination from January 25

CHITTAGONG, January 23: Some three million children in the age group of nine months and 15 years will be vaccinated in Chittagong city and district from January 25 to February 13.
Of them, 18, 99,306 children are in the 14 upazilas of Chittagong district and 10, 99,457 in 41 wards of the port city.
At a press conference in the auditorium of Chittagong City Corporation City Mayor M Manjur Alam said the vaccination programme has been taken to ward off measles and rubella, which are infectious diseases.
In his power point presentation on measles and rubella Dr Kazi Md Hassan Ameen, surveillance Medical Officer of Immunization and Vaccine Development of the World Health Organization said that measles is a dangerous infectious virus which attacks others in contact with the patient.
Mayor Manjur Alam said, if a pregnant woman is attacked with the rubella virus the unborn baby can be attacked from its mother in 90 per cent cases. So, to get rid of this dangerous virus the mother should be very careful about the danger of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).
The programe will be conducted through 1210 primary, secondary, higher secondary, kindergarten schools, madrasas and temporary and permanent vaccination centres in the city.
In addition to vaccination of measles and rubella the children would also be given two drops of polio vaccination. Under the programme there will be advocacy meetings comprising city corporation ward councilors, NGO members, government and semi government officials while some 700 members from physicians, zonal medical officers, health workers, paramedics, EPI technicians, pharmacy workers, lab technicians, vaccination workers will join the programme.

Civil Surgeon of Chittagong Dr Sarfaraz Khan Chowdhury said 18, 99,306 children from 14 upazilas of the district will come under the programme during the campaign programme from 25 January to 13 February. The programme will be conducted through 4800 regular vaccination centres in 600 wards of 200 union councils in the upazilas.
