Media and police
Thursday, 21 May 2015
A leading local English daily carried a front page analysis on May 9. It was about some wrong statements by the police which were subsequently corrected due to persistent and correct reporting by journalists. I congratulate our pressmen for doing their basic duty, i.e. to bring out the real truth without fear or favour. They deserve our appreciation for their bold steps in ensure the century old axiom that 'truth shall prevail'.
In sad contrast, our police is often seen refraining from taking actions action against crimes committed in broad daylight or in public places. Memory of the incident on Pahela Baishakh on Dhaka University premises is still fresh in our mind. It is said that the police can make black into white and vice versa as long as their palms are greased.
All said and done, I believe most readers will agree with me that there are still a lot of police personnel with professional honesty and moral integrity who are sitting by the sidelines. In greater interest of the country they should be evaluated and promoted.
