Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad emphasised developing concrete understanding on corporate governance in the media and said it can make readers aware of the activities of different companies through disseminating correct information.
"Corporate governance is a sector where the media needs to gain deeper knowledge, better perspective and improved understanding," he said Tuesday while distributing certificates among journalists of print and electronic media at the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop.
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) in partnership with IFC, the Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF) and Thomson Reuters Foundation organised the interactive media workshop titled 'Reporting on Corporate Governance in Bangladesh' to provide substantial understanding on corporate governance including company performance, reputation and report on business activities among the journalists.
BEI President Farooq Sobhan chaired the closing ceremony where Paul Gallagher of Thomson Reuters Foundation and Eugene Spiro of GCGF also spoke.
The information minister said the global financial crisis was attributed to the failure of major financial institutions in adhering to the core principles of good corporate governance and added that the role of media in promoting good corporate governance practices is tremendous.
"It is important that the individuals involved not only understand the issues around corporate governance but also learn to effectively and responsibly report on those issues," the minister added.
Farooq Sobhan said corporate governance is the key to the development of both private and public companies and attract foreign investors into the country adding that corporate governance indicators would help improve the performance of listed companies in the share market.
