Media can play vital role to strengthen local government

KHULNA, Dec 24 (BSS): Speakers at a workshop here today (Wednesday) said media can play a vital role in making local government service oriented, fare and transparent organization.
They were speaking at a workshop styled 'role of local media to make Union Parishad and Upazila Parishad service oriented, democratic and transparent organization' at the conference room of the deputy commissioner Office in the city.
Khulna district administration and Upazila Parisad Governance Project-Union Parisad Governance Project and Local Government Department jointly organized the workshop with deputy commissioner Anis Mahmud in the chair.
The speakers called upon the local government representatives to play increased role to make UZ Parishads more effective, to render services to the people, to establish good governance, to enhance capability to strengthen budgetary system and to increase its quality.
Director of local government in Khulna district Habibul Islam Khan, Dumuria upazila chairman Khan Ali Mansur, President and general secretary of Khulna Press Club Faruk Ahmed and S M Zahid Hossain respectively, among others spoke at the workshop.
A total of 14,000 UP chairmen, Vice chairmen, UNO and other upazila level government officials have taken training under the Upazila Governance Project(UPZGP) while a total of 7,809 Union Parishad level public representatives have taken planning and management related training under the Union Parishad Government Project (UPGP).
Upazila Parishad chairmen and Union Parishad chairmen and vice chairmen, upazila level government officials, journalists, among others, attended the workshop.
