Meet on improving land border infrastructure today

The government is intensifying move to improve infrastructure in land borders with India to ease export and import activities.
A government committee holds a meeting today (Wednesday) at the Sonamasjid land customs station to evaluate the existing position of land customs (LCs) stations on both sides, officials said.
It will recommend measures for development of land ports.
Representatives of commerce ministry, foreign ministry, land port authority, National Board of Revenue (NBR), Bangladesh High Commissioner in India will attend the meeting.
The committee will give a comprehensive report to the commerce ministry on the present condition of LC stations with recommendations by seven days.
Five LC stations of Bangladesh, including Benapole, have port facilities for smooth export-import trade, but the LC stations of India lack such infrastructural facilities, importers said.
Currently, only 31 out of Bangladesh's 179 LC stations are operative. Of them, five LC stations -- Benapole, Banglabandha, Sonamasjid, Hili and Bibir Bazar -- have modern infrastructural facilities like warehouse, sheds, truck loading and unloading facilities, parking yards etc.
