Chattogram, May 06: About 76 per cent work of the mega project to recover canals in Chattogram designed to solve the waterlogging problem in the port city, has been completed.
Among the 57 canals of Chattogram, the authorities concerned have been working to recover 36 canals under the mega project of around Tk 60 billion. The project commenced in 2018. The work of 28 canals has totally been completed so far, while work of 8 other canals is yet to be completed.
As the canals are being recovered, the navigability of all 36 canals is almost normal. Therefore, the waterlogging problem of the city will be resolved after the total completion of the project. However, the rest of 21 canals in Chattogram, which are out of the purview of this project, will continue to pose a problem for the city, sources said.
Project Director (PD) of the mega project Lieutenant Colonel Shah Ali said, "We are completing the work of the 36 canals under the project." He also said, "The work to construct the retaining walls and other work of the canals is going on. We can hand over the canals to the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) this year."
"We have completed 76 per cent work of the project. We have constructed 45 bridges, six culverts, 10.77km drains, and 15.5km roadside drains. Out of 176km retaining walls, we have already completed 118km retaining walls so far," he added.
Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in association with the Bangladesh Army have been implementing the mega project of around Tk 60 billion since 2018.
