Men occupy 75pc jobs in news media

Saturday, 10 December 2011

FE Report Nearly 75 per cent of the top management jobs and two-thirds of the reporting jobs are occupied by men in news media, said a global study report on media. The report titled 'Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media', a two-year study of 500 broadcast and print companies in nearly 60 countries, was published by International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF). A statement issued by IWMF Friday said, top international women media executives gathered in Washington, DC, in March to examine the report. They analyzed gender barriers and agreed on a plan of action to level the playing field. ABC's Diane Sawyer told the leaders that in order to succeed women "have to climb together linking arms." In October, the IWMF honored four brave women who risked their lives covering the news and presented them the Courage in Journalism Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles and New York City. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton saluted the IWMF Courage winners in a videotaped message "for making our world fairer, freer and juster through your bravery and the power of your example and the strength of your words." Throughout the world, the IWMF has undertaken intensive programs to train journalists from Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe and the US. This year 10 reporters were trained to produce in-depth news coverage of the HIVAIDS epidemic in South Africa.
