Metro rail service resumes today after 37 days

FE REPORT | Sunday, 25 August 2024

Metro rail service in the capital will resume today (Sunday) after over a month of closure.
However, trains will not stop at Mirpur-10 and Kazipara metro stations for the time being. Passenger services will remain closed at these two stations.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges announced in a notification on Saturday that the metro rail would run according to the new schedule.
The authorities stopped movement of the metro rail on July 18 when the police box was set on fire at Mirpur-10 during the quota reform movement. The next day, Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations were vandalised.
After the interim government took over, it was decided in a meeting of the advisory council on August 11 that the metro rail service would be resumed on August 17.
However, a press release from the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) on August 15 said that it was not possible to resume the metro rail service on August 17 due to unavoidable circumstances as the necessary technical tests could not be started yet.
Recently DMTCL said that lines, coaches and signalling-all of the metro rail were fine. However, the reason why the metro rail service did not start was strike of workers.
