Migrant workers' welfare

Friday, 6 March 2009

FOR their welfare, the migrant workers need support from the government. A welfare fund can do this whether they have work as well as when they lose their jobs or face difficulties because of situations like the current global economic crisis. They get almost nothing for all the support they provide to the country for sending their hard-earned money home when they work abroad. The government announcement to create a labour welfare association for the benefits of the migrant workers created optimism among these people.

A welfare fund, created earlier by the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) had failed to provide the results except for bringing back the workers who die abroad. Otherwise, as migrant workers say, they do not get any support from this fund, created with the money they deposit to get government permission to go abroad for work.

The labour welfare association, comprising representatives, should, therefore, pay attention to labour welfare.
