A high-powered army inquiry committee, headed by Quartermaster General Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, starts functioning today (Tuesday) to investigate the carnage inside the BDR headquarters, reports UNB.

Briefing reporters at the Army Officers Banquet Hall in Dhaka Cantonment on Monday evening amid some fast developments over the mutiny, Chief of General Staff Lt General Sina Ibne Jamali said the inquiry committee will visit the haunted BDR headquarters and inspect the places where the massacre took place on February 25-26.

In a further development, he said, the government took a decision in principle to change the nomenclature of the mutiny-mauled Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soon, after completing some legal procedures.

About the missing army officers, Gen Sina updated the press on the figure saying that seven officers are now missing. They are Col Gulzar Ahmed, Lt Col Manzur Elahi, Maj Abu Sayeed, Maj Azizul Hakim, Maj Ashraf Hossain, Maj Makbul Hossain and Capt Tanvir Haider.

He said three unidentified bodies have been kept in Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary, and their identities could be ascertained only after DNA tests.

So far, he said, 56 bodies of the army officers and their families have been recovered and 40 other officers rescued alive.

Asked about the missing of 72 officers as stated by MI Director Brig Gen Mahbub, Gen Sina said, "After checks and cross-checks we have confirmed seven officers now missing."
