Milk production falls sharply in B'baria

Our Correspondent | Tuesday, 22 July 2008

BRAHMANBARIA, July 21: Milk production has sharply fallen in all the eight upazilas of the district.

According to sources, the production of milk has come down sharply due to rapid decline in the number of milk cows.

The poor cultivators of the district till their lands with the help of milk cows as they are unable to afford bullocks. Milk cows are also slaughtered off and on for meat as many cultivators have sold their milk cows to the butchers due to economic hardship.

Fresh grass required for milk cows is not available now-a-days. Grass is not grown as in early times because the pattern of crops grown has changed with the introduction of mechanised system of cultivation.

A major proportion of cultivable land has been brought under vegetable production and as seed bed for coming transplanted Aman cultivation. Previously Khesari, Maskalai, lentil, Motor and Dhancha were grown in these lands. These crops were profusely used as fodder for milk cows.

Besides, cattle diseases are very common in the district. During the past several prolonged catastrophic floods and other natural calamities, a large number of milk cows died of various diseases without proper treatment.
