FE Report
Abdul Awal Mintoo, former President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Com merce and Industry (FBCCI), was freed on bail Thursday.
The FBCCI hailed the release of its former president and said that it would help restore confidence in the business community.
"We welcome the release of our former president and it will certainly restore confidence among businessmen," FBCCI vice-president Mohammad Ali told the FE.
Mintoo, a leading businessman, was picked up by joint forces May 29 on charges of extortion. He was released on bail following a High Court order.
On Wednesday, the authorities also freed Bengal Group owner Abul Khair Litu on bail.
The caretaker government installed in January this year has declared a war on corruption and put a good number of businessmen-turned-politicians behind bars.
Abdul Awal Mintoo was received by his sons and relatives at the gate of Dhaka Central Jail.
UNB adds: Mintoo came out of Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday evening, three days after the High Court granted him bail in an extortion case instituted against him after his arrest.
On August 14, the already-detained Mintoo was shown arrested in an extortion case after the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order granting him bail declaring his confinement "unlawful" under the Emergency Powers Rules.
Abdus Sattar, a resident of 7/1 North Road of Bhuter Gali in the city, filed the case against seven persons, including Mintoo, with Dhanmondi police station.
In his case statement, Sattar alleged that Mintoo, along with six other accomplices, demanded Tk 5.0 million from him in toll. They also "threatened to kill" him if he failed to give the money by May 25 this year.
The joint forces picked up the business leader from in front of the Naval Headquarters on May 30.
