A Dhaka court on Wednesday discharged BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from a defamation case which was filed for calling former state minister for law Qamrul Islam ‘insane’. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Anwar Sadat passed the order upon a petition filed by the lawyer of the accused, M Sanaullah Mia. The petition mentioned that as the complainant of the case did not appear in court on five scheduled dates, the accused might be discharged from the case according to Section 247 of CrPC. On July 18, 2010, advocate Abdul Malek alias Moshiur Malek, founder and president of Bangabandhu Foundation, filed the case with the CMM Court, Dhaka. The complainant said Mirza Fakhrul termed Qamrul ‘insane’ at a discussion organised by Zia Parisad at National Press Club in the city on July 14, 2010, according to a news agency.
