Mismatch in first merit list results alleged
FE Report | Wednesday, 1 July 2015
Many of the top-grade holding admission seekers were left out of the first merit list for a technical glitch and now their hopes hinge on the second merit list to be published on July 6.
After a three-day delay the government published the first merit list for the college admission on Sunday last (June 28) and asked all the secondary educational institutions to complete their admission process by July 2. Soon after publication of the results many institutions and admission seekers themselves complained of a mismatch in the results of the first merit list.
They said despite having good score in the secondary school certificate (SSC) examinations, the benchmark for admission, many students did not get any college of their choice for their admission. Besides, some students were also misplaced on the list.
Mohsin Kabir, who secured GPA-5 in the SSC exam from Feni Central High School, had applied for five colleges in the capital, but he has been listed for admission to Borhan Uddin College in Bhola district.
Yousuf Binte Eba, another admission aspirant, lodged a complaint with the Dhaka Board, saying that she had wrongly been selected for Anwara Begum Muslim Girls' High School and College in the quota category.
Like Eba, many admission seekers have been lodging complains with the education boards for alleged mismatch in the merit results.
Dr. Shahan Ara Begum, principal of the city's Ideal School and College, told the FE that they had got the list many hours after its publication. "However, our problems have been solved," she added.
Officials involved with the online admission process told the FE that technical glitches caused the unwanted delay in the result publication.
"Regrettably, this technical fault was because of inadequate preparation of the government to handle such a process that involves over 1.10 million students," a senior official at the Dhaka Board said requesting anonymity.
However, finally, a team of technical experts from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) resolved the problem, the official noted.
Prof Dr Md Hasibur Rashid, convener of the Dhaka University online admission section, said that the college admission involved over 1.0 million students and so it required a better preparation for it.
The results of the first merit list for college admission for the academic session 2015-16 are available on the ministry website www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd. The results were scheduled to be published on Thursday night.
The ministry of education asked the students to complete their migration to their desired colleges on completion of the enrolment by July 4, if necessary.
A total of 1.15 million (11.56 lakh) students applied for college enrolment, which has been based on results of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations of the past few years.
The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, in a statement said students on the first merit list would be able to be admitted to college by July 2 without paying any late fees.
