Thursday, 1 February 2024

Mitchell Marsh's one-day international dominance in the year Australia won the 50-over World Cup in India lifted him to a popular victory in the Allan Border Medal count in Melbourne on Wednesday, according to Australia's daily newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald.
He has taken out the Allan Border Medal for the first time, capping off an incredible career revival for Australia.
By adding a series of strong Test match performances to the table when he was recalled to the red-ball team midway through the Ashes series in England, Marsh polled 223 votes across the formats to sprint away to the medal, well ahead of captain Pat Cummins (144) and deputy Steve Smith (141).
"It's obviously a huge honour. Cameron Green is a pretty imposing figure so I thought I was done and dusted," 32- year Marsh said, choking back tears.
"I spoke to my wife [Greta] often about wanting to get one more crack at it, and it's been amazing.
"I'm extremely thankful. I have a beautiful family, they've been so supportive. There's no doubt over the last 12-18 months, I've felt a lot of love. One of my friends sent me the list [of winners] today ... I can't believe it."
Ash Gardner (147 votes) took out her second Belinda Clark Award in three years in a closer count over fellow all-rounders Ellyse Perry (134) and Annabel Sutherland (106). Gardner's match-winning spell in the Ashes Test victory over England in Nottingham was a key moment.
