Mitsubishi Heavy to boost reactor production

Sunday, 31 August 2008

TOKYO, Aug 30, (AFP): Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. will boost its production of core nuclear power equipment by investing 15 billion yen (138 million dollars) in its key plant, a newspaper reported today.

The nation's largest heavy machinery manufacturer plans to double production capacity at its nuclear power equipment plant in Akashi, western Japan, the Nikkei business daily said.

Construction would begin in January for completion in mid- 2011, the newspaper added.

The plan was part of the firm's efforts to meet growing demands for nuclear reactors in the global market amid the recent surge in oil prices and calls for a cut in greenhouse gas emissions, the daily said.

With the capacity expansion, Mitsubishi Heavy intended to slash production time for a reactor vessel from three years to two years, it said.
