Mizan Tower to be examined

Thursday, 29 May 2014

The capital development authority, Rajuk, will write to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to examine whether a high-rise building in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur is fit for use after a gas line explosion there. Rajdhani Unnayan Kortripokkho (Rajuk) has also decided to form a five-member body to probe Wednesday’s explosion on a gas line beneath the ‘Mizan Tower’. However, the building did not develop any crack after the explosion, Rajuk’s Kalyanpur zone official Mahbubur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Thursday. It should be examined whether the high-rise is suitable for accommodation after the blast, he said. ’We are giving a letter to BUET to examine the building. It will depend on their report whether the building is fit for use,’ he said. The Rajuk official could not provide details about who will be in the probe committee. The explosion occurred on the north-west corner where a septic tank was located. The 12-storey building houses shops, businesses and residential flats. A number of the building’s residents were seen clearing out fearing the building had tilted. The building’s gas and power supplies were cut off after the accident. The explosion that shook the building damaged at least two shops and injured at least five people. According to bdnews24.com.
