Mizan Tower \\\'unsafe\\\'

Friday, 30 May 2014

RAJUK, the capital development agency, believes a Dhaka multi-storey building, which has reportedly been rocked by two explosions on Wednesday, is unsafe. RAJUK officials examined the ‘Mizan Tower’ at Kalyanpur in the city on Thursday evening. Residents of the 11-storey building cleared out after the first explosion on Wednesday evening. The building’s gas and power connections have been cut off for safety reasons. A second blast occurred on Thursday afternoon spreading panic among the locals and prompting police and RAJUK officials to rush there. RAJUK’s planning division member Sheikh Abdul Mannan who visited the scene told reporters that the building was ‘risky’. ‘A team of experts from BUET will inspect the building on Friday to determine its condition,’ he said. ‘Their report will conclude whether the building is safe for its residents to return or it will be demolished,’ Mannan said. At least two shops on the building’s ground floor were damaged and several people were injured in the first explosion. Titas Gas company rejected fire service’s claim that the blast was caused by a leak in the gas supply pipe running below the building. They said the explosion took place in a septic tank located at the building’s foot. When asked about the explosion, RAJUK official Mannan said, ‘Gas accumulating in the building’s sewerage line over a long period of time might have triggered the explosion,’ according to bdnews24.com.
