Mobile users drop for violence in July

The number of mobile subscribers in Bangladesh dropped significantly for violence in July, with all four major telecom operators collectively losing around 1.82 million customers, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
This reduced the total subscriber base to 194.26 million.
During the month, all the mobile operators - Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink and Teletalk - collectively lost around 1.65 million internet users, according to the BTRC monthly data.
With the loss, the number of internet users reached 127.52 million in July from 129.17 last June.
In terms of losing mobile subscribers, Banglalink was the hardest hit, losing 920,000 users and bringing its subscriber count down to 43.56 million.
Despite this, it still recorded a 2.98-percent year-on-year growth.
Robi Axiata, the second-largest operator, lost 590,000 customers, lowering its subscriber number to 58.92 million, though it saw a 3.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Grameenphone, the country's largest telecom operator, saw a loss of 290,000 subscribers, reducing its base to 85.24 million.
However, on a yearly basis, it showed the highest growth rate of 4.16 per cent.
Teletalk, the state-owned operator, lost about 50,000 customers, bringing its total to 65.5 million with a modest 1.24 per cent year-on-year growth.
