Mobile users reach 84m

Subscriber growth of mobile phone operators of the country was 22.48 per cent until November 2011, taking the number of new subscribers to 15.431 million according the data provided by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Sunday.
Among the six firms, four operators-Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Airtel- saw continuous growth in this time while rest of the two operators-Citycell and state run mobile company Teletalk- experienced negative growth.
Grameenphone, the largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh, added 6.143 million new subscribers to reach 36.113 million, maintaining its top position while Banglalink added 4.04 million, Robi 3.487 million and Airtel 1.845 million.
Currently, the second largest market player Banglalink has 23.367 million subscribers followed by Robi with 15.855 million and Airtel with 5.801 million.
By this time, country`s lone CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) operator Citycell lost 72 thousand subscribers, coming down from 1.811 to 1.739 million and Teletalk also lost 13 thousand users reaching 1.198 million from 1.211 subscribers.
The number of mobile users was 68.645 million in December, 2010 and there were 15.431 million new subscribers within the time, taking the total number to 84.076 million.
Experts said low-cost handsets, competitive call rates and attractive packages led to continuous rise in the number of mobile phone users in the country. Head of Corporate Affairs of Grameenphone Mahmud Hossain told the FE that they had a number of reasons behind the increase in their subscriber-base.
He said Grameenphone gives the highest quality of service with lucrative packages to customers.
The end of December 2009 recorded 52.43 million mobile phone subscribers, a substantial growth from the 44.64 million mobile phone users recorded in December 2008, the BRTC data revealed.
