FE Report
A high-level team of Ministry of Commerce (MoC), led by its secretary Muhammad Ghulam Hossain, Wednesday visited three large refineries and sugar mills in Narayanganj to have an idea about their production and method of appointing distributors countrywide. The distributorship system, first of its kind in the country to replace traditional and notorious delivery order (DO) system, will formally begin from next June 20. The food items like edible oil and sugar will come under the new system, initially. However, the distributorship system will come into effect on a trial basis from June 1, a trade official said. The visited mills and refiners belong to City Group, Meghna Group and Abdul Monem Group. "The refiners and sugar mill owners meantime have completed their appointing process of distributors, which will replace DO system," Commerce Secretary Muhammad Ghulam Hossain told the FE. "The very objective to introduce the system is to stabilize the prices of essentials in the local market and elimination of DO business, which often acts as catalyst for unusual price hike of food items," he added. The MoC team expressed its satisfaction over the supply position of sugar and edible oil in the large sugar mills and refineries ahead of Ramadan . The joint secretaries of MoC Amitabh Chakrabarti and Shawkat Ali Warasi were in the team, among other trade officials.
