Moderate tremor jolts many parts of country

A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted many parts of the country, including the capital in the early hours of Sunday, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

Witnesses said people got panicked as the tremor jolted twice at 12:51 am when most people were asleep.

Many city-dwellers woke up and screamed as buildings and cots jolted for a while.

Students of Mohsin and Jagannath halls of Dhaka University jumped from their dormitories being panicked by the quake. A large number of students were injured.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi correspondent reported that a tremor also shook the Rajshahi city at the dead of night panicking the local people, who got scared as a few days back a moderate earthquake also struck the northwestern city at late night.

Mominul Islam, a meteorologist of the Storm Warning Centre, told the bdnews24.com that the quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Several callers phoned the news agency newsroom and wanted to know the details.

The DU Correspondent of the FE adds: At least 40 students of Dhaka University (DU) were injured as they jumped below from the balconies of their dormitories being panicked by the tremor.

Of the injured, 17 students were of Mohsin Hall, 14 of Jagannath Hall, three of Surya Sen Hall and two each of Zia Hall, Jashim Uddin Hall and F Rahman Hall. Five of them including DU Correspondent of the Daily Khabarpatra Abul Kalam Azad broke their hands and legs.

All of them were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by their classmates immediately. Six critically-injured students were undergoing treatment at the hospital till filing this report Sunday.

DU Vice-Chancellor SMA Faiz, Proctor AK Feroz Ahmed and hall provosts visited the injured students in the morning.

When asked, the Proctor said the university authorities were bearing all treatment expenses of the injured students.

Hundreds of students of the university, being panicked, started rushing out of their rooms when the earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, shook the halls at 12:52 am.

The Met office sources said the epicentre of the tremor was 238 km northwest of the Dhaka seismic centre.
