A modern wireless communication laboratory became operational Tuesday at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to carry out research, training and development of telecommunications.
The world standard facility, entirely financed by Huawei Technologies, aims to help local talents pursue career in flourishing telecom sector of Bangladesh.
Huawei, the China-based private company, provided modern wireless equipment worth around US$ 3.0 million for establishment of laboratory under its corporate social responsibility programme for the students of the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the university.
A function was organised on the occasion by BUET at the Council Bhaban (building) in the university.
Speaking as chief guest, BUET vice-chancellor Dr AMM Safiullah thanked Huawei for its support to build the laboratory, which will be very helpful for the students.
"Students will be provided with technical training on GSM (global system for mobile communication), which will help enhance their career in the country's telecom sector," he said.
The BUET vice-chancellor said this laboratory will help cut the visit abroad for training on GSM by Bangladeshi engineers and it will also save a huge amount of local currency.
He said engineers go to different countries like China and Malaysia to have training on GSM. But now they will get such training here.
Responding to a query, Dr. Safiullah said BUET has selected Huawei for the laboratory as the company manufactures 50 per cent of telecommunication equipments used by the country's six telecom operators. "That's why they have been selected," he added.
