Modi at the helm in India
Sunday, 18 May 2014
Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has won the majority seats in the Lok Sabha election in India and it is going to form the new government with Narendra Modi as the Prime Minster.
The world is watching India with curiosity. Many believe the changeover in power of Indian politics will have an impact on local and regional politics. Modi is now 63. In his student life he was described by his teacher as average student who had a keen interest in theatre. He was the Chief Minister of Gujrat in 2001, and during his time India saw one of the worst communal atrocities in modern times where a thousand people, mostly Muslims, were massacred. Modi's role was questionable during that critical hour. Now, all that is history. Time will tell whether the people of India have taken the right decision. BJP and Modi have now the opportunity to bring the downtrodden Indian people out of abject poverty and also maintain harmony among the hugely diverse social segments -- divided by language, caste and religion. Bangladesh shares a close and significant relation with India as we are neighbours; and a peaceful neighbourhood is always desirable than an unsafe neighbourhood.
