CHITTAGONG, May 19 (UNB): ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury who is seeking re-election as Mayor of Chittagong has announced his resignation.
"I will resign at 10am tomorrow before filing nomination papers for the June 17 mayoral election," Mohiuddin, also president of Chittagong City Awami League, told a meeting at the City Corporation today.
Beaming Mohiuddin Chowdhury feels assured of his win in the fracas against Manjurul Alam Manju, the main opponent fielded by BNP. He gleefully observed that Manju's nomination had widened the rift in the BNP camp.
He, however, posed a question, "To whom shall I hand over the charge of Mayor?" He said the government circular binding him to resign before filing nomination was conspicuous about it.
"I've sought guidance from the Chief Election Commissioner and the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry as well about it but there is no response till now," he added.
Saying au revoir to officials and staff of the City Corporation, Mohiuddin Chowdhury said he strongly believed in democracy and hoped citizens of Chittagong would again vote for him as he had done his best to provide all available civic amenities to them during the three consecutive tenures as the Mayor.
