Mohiuddin Chy vows to foil hartal

CHITTAGONG, Nov 29: Former city mayor and Awami League leader Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has vowed to take to the streets and move around the city with his private car during Tuesday's dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the opposition BNP.
He urged the party leaders and supporters and the transport owners and workers to ply their vehicles as usual and guard against all illegal activities like damaging and torching vehicles in the name of general shut down.
President of Awami League Chittagong city unit said this while exchanging views with the owners and operators of different public transport associations at a community centre in the city today.
"We are not against peaceful demonstration. But don't give in to the rowdy elements who will try to go wild on the roads and damage public transport," he added.
Transport owners and workers welcomed the call of the former city mayor and announced they would remain on the streets with their transports in the city with support from the law enforcement agencies.
The meeting was also attended by vice president of the association Zahur Ahmed, general secretary Abul Kalam Azad, inter-district bus owners association treasurer Lokman Ahmed, city bus owners association secretary Belayet Hssain, inter-district road transport owners and workers association president Haji Ruhul Amin, Md Imran, Zahir Ahmed Chowdhury, Chaktai-Khatungonj warehouses owners association president Jahangir Alam and Tamakumondi Lane traders association president Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury.
