CHITTAGONG, June 12 (BSS): Nagorik Committee Chittagong (NCC)-backed mayor candidate former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has demanded cancellation of candidature of BNP-backed mayoral candidate Monjur Alam Monju as he violated electoral rules.
Mr Chowdhury made the allegation at a crowded press conference held at NCC office today (Satur-day) afternoon.
He told the conference that Mr Monju was fined nearly Tk 5.0 million by the Power Development Board (PDB) and Bakhrabad Gas Systems Limited (BGSL) for illegal use of electricity and gas.
Mr Monju hid the criminal offences in his nomination papers, which violated electoral rules, Mr Chowdhury added.
Besides, a ruling party leader made another allegation that the Leader of the Opposition also breached electoral codes of conduct by holding a teleconference with the top BNP leaders in Chittagong.
Mr Ishaq Mia Chowdhury, chief election agent for ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, brought the formal allegations sending three separate letters to the Returning Officers last evening.
Meanwhile, mobile court, monitoring electioneering of the CCC, fined Saturday seven councillor candidates for violating election code of conduct.
Election Commission (EC) office sources said the court realised Tk 15000 from five councillor candidates and warned two others.
The sources also said 41 executive magistrates were conducting mobile courts in 41 wards of CCC and those who violated the election code of conduct were presented before the court.
