CHITTAGONG, May 20: Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has resigned from the post and submitted his nomination paper seeking an unprecedented fourth term in office as the CCC mayor.
He was accompanied by some leaders of Awami League Chittagong city committee and leaders of Citizens' Committee, Chittagong. He filed his nomination paper under the banner of the Citizens' Committee. No ruling party MP was present at that time.
Coming out of the EC he told the reporters that he tried his best to serve the city people. He served as mayor of the CCC for about 16 years. In 1996 and 2005 he defeated Mir Nasir of BNP and in 2001 he was elected uncontested.
Meanwhile, BNP-backed mayoral candidate M Manjur Alam Thursday submitted his nomination paper. He handed it over to the returning officer at around 3:30pm.
BNP's Chittagong city unit president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, secretary Shahadat Hussain, president of Chittagong south district Jafrul Islam Chowdhury MP and leaders of Chittagong Development Movement (CDM) were present at that time.
Former acting mayor Manju was a long time councillor from Ward No. 10 of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC). Main opposition party in Parliament BNP decided to back Manju for his 'clean image' and to avoid internal conflict within the party's local leaders.
