CHITTAGONG, May 16: Chittagong City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury today sought a clear direction from the LGRD ministry over his resignation from the post and handing over the same to others prior to his submission of nomination paper.
In a D/O letter to LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam the mayor said that he has collected nomination form for the mayoral post for the Chittagong City Corporation election-2010.
He has decided to submit the nomination paper on May 20 by fulfilling all conditions set by the Election Commission (EC). But the clause 15 of the circular issued by the EC on April 6 has nothing specific regarding resignation of the incumbent mayor.
However, the election commissioner Shakhawat Hussain in an interview with a private TV channel and reports published in the national media stated that the mayor has to resign from the post before submitting nomination paper.
"Absence of any gazette or circular giving directives either from the LGRD ministry or from the EC in this regard has created confusion on the issue," mayor Mohiuddin said adding he is in a dilemma regarding resignation.
The mayor said he is committed to abiding by the rules of the EC and seeks directives from the authority concerned.
