The Ministry of Industries (MoI) will provide all assistance to the BUET to set up a Metal Institute to increase research and training facilities for ensuring industrial development of the country, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Thursday. "Effective coordination between the MoI and the BUET is needed to utilise the knowledge of the engineers to facilitate large-scale industrialisation in the country," he said. The minister was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the two-daylong 'MME Day 2011' at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in the city. The programme was organised by the Metal and Meteorological Engineering (MME) Department of the BUET. Chairman of the Department Dr Md Aminul Islam presided over it. The minister said steps will be taken to set up the institute through signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the MoI and the BUET. The proposed institute will offer training and research facilities to the people concerned for improving the local steel, ceramics, polymer, plastic and other industries. Mr Barua said the government is taking steps to create employment and research opportunities for the BUET graduates. The speakers of the programme emphasised setting up new research centres, so that the country can properly utilise the knowledge of the BUET graduates. They said local private entrepreneurs, like the developed countries, should come forward to invest in this regard, from which they would be benefited more. They also suggested formation of a Knowledge Commission to accelerate research work for ensuring rapid industrialisation in the country.
